Winter Book Display

I've been a little lazy with the book displays the past few weeks. Or maybe I should say I've been very busy with other important things at work. That sounds better, doesn't it? And it's true, I swear.

Anyway, I had a realistic fiction display in our Junior High Fiction area all of November. High time for something different! We're getting out our Christmas (and Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa, in much smaller numbers) books today, so to complement them I pulled out some wintry fiction.

Currently on display:
- Northlander, by Meg Burden
- The Dark Is Rising, by Susan Cooper
- The Dreaming Place, by Charles DeLint
- Spud in Winter, by Brian Doyle
- The Winter War, by William Durbin
- Julie of the Wolves, by Jean Craighead George
- Girl Overboard, by Justina Chen Headley
- Far North, by Will Hobbs
- The Winter Road, by Terry Hokenson
- Miracle on 49th Street, by Mike Lupica
- Brian's Winter, by Gary Paulsen
- The Winter When Time Was Frozen, by Els Pelgrom
- Wintersmith, by Terry Pratchett
- The Trap, by John Smelcer
- Feathers, by Jacqueline Woodson

Not a bad combination of adventure, fantasy, realistic fiction, and even a little historical fiction, if I do say so myself.

Any suggestions of books to add when the supply is depleted? They need to be upper middle grade and/or tamer teen fiction. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe does not qualify in our library, alas!

Comments

I'm not sure this will make the cut if Narnia doesn't, but what about The Golden Compass? They spend an awful lot of time in the frozen north with panserbjorn after all.

Other possibilities:

Graceling / Cashore (my new favorite book): they have to flee the bad guy through snowy mountains

Jackaroo / Voigt: trapped in a cabin all winter

The Saturdays / Enright: Rush finds Isaac in winter

Little Women / Alcott: I seem to remember them being cold a lot

The Long Winter / Wilder: doesn't stand a chance if LWW got axed

That’s all I can come up with off the top of my head, but I’ll keep thinking.

Ooh, great ideas! Thanks!

Unfortunately, The Long Winter, Little Women, and The Saturdays we have in our Children's Fiction section on the opposite end of the department, so I can't nab those; that's why LWW "got axed." ;-) But you've inspired me. Once the December holidays are out of the way, I'll make a winter fiction display on that end so I can include them!

The Golden Compass and Jackaroo are totally fair game for the junior high display! We are still waiting for our copy of Graceling to arrive (with bated breath, I might add). Thanks again, Lush!

There are definitely times when our fiction breakdown (Children's vs. Junior High vs. High School) seems overly complex—times like these, for example! But most of the time it works pretty well.

I luuuurved Graceling and cannot *wait* for the next volumes to come out.

Which won't be for at least a year.

Arg!!!

It is an excellent book--I inhaled it in one sitting, and bought my own copy today. I plan on rereading it very soon. Great for fans of Tamora Pierce and Robin McKinley's Damar, and Cynthia Voigt's Kingdom.

More suggestions:
Once Upon a Time in the North / Pullman (duh!!)
Woman Who Loved Reindeer / Pierce (might be too young)
Darkangel Trilogy / Pierce (lots of ice)
The Snow Queen / Vinge. (might be in adult sci fi)

One more: Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow / George

Thanks, Lush. These are great, and I know right now several of them are in our Jr. High section, too!

How about:

East by Edith Pattou

Was it winter in Princess Academy by Shannon Hale? I seem to remember lots of ice...

North by Donna Jo Napoli (I don't think the whole book is winter, but, well, it's cold!)

Life As We Knew It (er... nuclear winter, but still...)

The Finnish Line by Linda Gerber

These are awesome. Thanks so much, Abby!

I found you doing a search for Winter Book Library Displays. I am doing one now for the junior high library in which I work, and I wanted ideas. I am so excited to have found you!

I love your list of books! Some I have pulled and you may not have thought of yet are:

Blackthorn Winter: A Murder Mystery by Kathryn Reiss
Curse of a Winter Moon by Mary Casanova
The Winter Prince by Elizabeth E. Wein
Snow: A Novel by Calvin Miller
A Perfect Snow by Nora Martin
Winter by John Marsden
The Winter People by Joseph Bruchac

Hooray! Thanks for sharing your suggestions!
